Dancing with Suzie Gaffney

Dance Photo

Thursdays, March 5 – April 23 (8 week class) from 7:00-8:00 pm. This class is for those who want to have fun with fitness, dance, and creativity.  This is not a traditional modern class but one that explores different movement combinations with many different types of music and styles to increase our dance skills, creative potential, and endorphin collective joy.  All ages 14 to 100, and all skill levels are welcome to dance the hour away!  Suzie Gaffney, with over 40 years of dance experience, will lead the class.  She is a retired public school teacher who spent most of her free time creating after school dance clubs for all ages, choreographing school and community musicals and productions, and as the dance director for the Kodiak Russian Dancers and later, the Juneau International Folk Dancers. Suzie graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a BA/MA in Dance and the Theatre Arts.  Cost is $5 pp, drop-ins are welcome.  Discounted tickets ($30.00) for the entire 8 weeks can be collected upon arrival or purchased on our website at camanoschoolhouse.com.  All proceeds fund the repair and preservation of the historic 1906 Camano City Schoolhouse and the newly acquired Camano City Firehouse, which are located at 993 Orchid Road (just off Chapman Rd.)  For more information, call Candy Bowden at (425) 399-0923. Women’s Work Productions “Carried by the Current”

Womens History Photo

1:00 PM on Saturday, March 7. In honor of Women’s History month, The Camano Schoolhouse presents Women's Work Productions in a 30-minute preview of “Carried by the Current”, an award-winning play about The Women's Commonwealth of Belton, Texas. In 1866, in a bid for independence, these women sold eggs, butter and cheese, formed a Common Fund, and then started doing the town's laundry. This menial labor on the part of married women angered the townspeople so the women moved in together, creating the prototype for the first safe house. From there they built and ran The Central Hotel, which became so successful, they changed the entire community's perception of women's role in society. But what led to their bid for independence? Join us to find out more about this captivating story from history. Refreshments included. A suggested donation of $10 is requested. All proceeds fund the repair and preservation of the historic 1906 Camano City Schoolhouse and the newly acquired Camano City Firehouse, which are located at 993 Orchid Road (just off Chapman Rd.)  For more information, call Candy Bowden at (425) 399-0923
